While it may appear that we have more and more choice in our lives, it seems that the opposite is true. It’s quite common for people to watch the same television programmes and movies, read the same popular books, listen to the similar opinions expressed on the radio and gravitate towards restaurants where the current trendy foods are. This pattern can be seen with clothes too because, though there’s a wide choice available, we’re generally influenced about what to wear by media articles and programmes on the fashionable looks of the season. ‘What’s in and what’s out’ and what we ‘must-have now’ are common slogans.
With all of these influences, we tend to conform more and more without paying attention to what we really like or what actually looks good on us. But much of what’s current and popular may not even suit us, our lifestyle or our individual proportions. By trying to keep up with fashion and fit in with popular trends, we may lose out on finding a unique personal style that expresses our true self.
If you struggle to find a personal ‘look’ and end up copying other people or unconsciously following fashion, it may be because you’re trying to be someone you’re not really designed to be. You are as unique as your fingerprints and this should be expressed in all the choices you make in your life – including your clothes.
This isn’t always easy, though, when you’ve become used to being like everyone else in order to feel accepted. It takes courage to step back and take a look at who you really are and what you really like and what you really want from your life. Getting to know ourselves is one of the greatest privileges that we have and it ensures that we live our lives to the fullest.
