This week, the focus is on becoming more AWARE of how you think and behave – and your shopping habits are a really good place to start reflecting on what you do and WHY you do what you do.
One of the main ways that the fashion industry ensures that you keep spending money is to CHANGE EVERYTHING from the previous season so that you feel ‘out of date’ when you wear clothes you bought only a few months or a year before.
For example, jackets in one season will be short with narrow lapels and then the next season they will be longer, with wider lapels. Or they will be fitted this season and then loose and flowing next season. These changes make the clothes from the previous season look ‘old-fashioned’ and dated to you, even though there is nothing wrong with them (unless you bought things just because they were fashionable, even if they didn’t suit you J).
Trouser styles will change from loose and wide-legged to fitted and straight-legged or from low-waisted to high-waisted – AND THEN BACK AGAIN.
Or the fashionable colours will change radically from pastels to brights or the theme of the season will change from something streamlined such as THE NAUTICAL LOOK to something very soft and floaty such as THE ROMANTIC LOOK.
This system ensures that the ‘new’ styles look NEW and the ‘old’ styles look OLD! And, because this has been going on forever, we’ve mostly become conditioned to follow the system and do what we’re told!
So, start observing this system at work and stay AWARE. Notice if you feel a bit old-fashioned and out-of-date in your clothes from last season. Notice if you have an urge to buy and consume more clothes because of this. Notice if you feel this even if you already have a wardrobe full of clothes and don’t have lots of spare cash to buy even more than you already have!
Remember, if you’re feeling any of these feelings … it’s because THE FASHION INDUSTRY IS DESIGNED TO MAKE YOU TO FEEL THIS WAY!
Become very AWARE of how you feel and don’t allow yourself to be manipulated or controlled by fashion.
You can use fashion wisely by knowing yourself, your personal style and your lifestyle so well that it’s easy for you to choose what you need from what the fashion industry offers each season.
